Geysers are the most common plumbing call-out in South African homes. Here's how to tell whether yours needs a repair or a replacement, and which Benoni plumbers do geyser work.
Repair or replace?
Usually a repair:
- no hot water, but no leak (often the element or thermostat)
- a dripping overflow pipe (often a valve)
- tripping electricity when the geyser switches on (have it checked; it may be the element)
Usually a replacement:
- water leaking from the geyser body itself
- a rusted or bulging tank
- an old geyser that keeps needing repairs
What affects the price
- the geyser size (litres) and type: electric, gas, solar or heat pump
- whether valves, the drip tray and pipework need replacing to meet the national standard (SANS 10254)
- access in the roof space
- the plumbing Certificate of Compliance for the new installation

Insurance
Most household policies cover a burst geyser, subject to the excess. Speak to your insurer before work starts, because many have approved plumbers. Read more: Burst geyser: what to do and how claims work.
Heat pumps and solar geysers
Replacing an electric geyser with a heat pump or solar system costs more upfront but can cut electricity use. Ask plumbers below who list heat pump or solar work for a comparison quote.
Frequently asked questions
Should I repair or replace my geyser?
Thermostats, elements and valves can usually be replaced. A leaking or rusted tank means replacement. Older geysers (roughly 10–15 years or more) are often better replaced, especially if insurance covers a burst.
Does home insurance cover a burst geyser?
Most policies cover a burst geyser and resulting damage, subject to an excess and terms. Phone your insurer first, because many use approved plumbers. See burst geyser: what to do.
Does a new geyser need a certificate?
Yes. A geyser installation must comply with the regulations, and the plumber should give you a certificate of compliance for the plumbing work. The electrical connection must be done safely and compliantly too.
Is a heat pump or solar geyser worth it?
They cost more upfront but cut water-heating electricity a lot. A heat pump uses roughly a third of the electricity of an element geyser. See geyser timer and saving electricity.
