A hidden leak can waste thousands of litres before you see any water. The first sign is often a municipal water bill that suddenly jumps.
Check for a leak yourself
- Close every tap in the house and make sure nothing is using water (washing machine, irrigation, pool top-up).
- Find your water meter, usually at the front boundary, and note the reading or watch the small dial.
- Wait 30 minutes without using any water, then check again.
- If the reading has moved, water is leaking somewhere after the meter.
Common signs
- A water bill that's much higher than usual
- Damp patches, bubbling paint or mould on walls or ceilings
- A wet patch in the garden that never dries, or unusually green grass in one spot
- The sound of running water when everything is off
- Low water pressure
How plumbers find leaks
Leak detection specialists use listening equipment, thermal cameras and pressure tests to find a leak inside a wall or under a floor, so they only need to open up the spot where the leak is. Ask whether the plumber does non-invasive detection and whether the repair is quoted separately.
Before or after the meter?
Leaks on the street side of your meter are normally the municipality's to fix: report them to the City of Ekurhuleni. Leaks on your side of the meter are the property owner's responsibility. If a leak caused damage, check your household insurance: many policies cover the damage, though not always the cost of finding the leak.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if I have a hidden water leak?
Turn off all taps and watch the water meter for 30 minutes. If it moves, water is escaping somewhere. See testing for a hidden leak.
Does leak detection mean digging up my yard?
Not necessarily. Plumbers with acoustic or thermal equipment can pinpoint many leaks, so only a small area needs to be opened.
Who pays for a leak on the street side of the meter?
Leaks between the municipal main and your meter are the City of Ekurhuleni's responsibility. Report them to the municipality. Leaks on your side of the meter are yours to fix.
Can I claim a high water bill caused by a leak?
Some municipalities consider a leak adjustment if you fix the leak and provide a plumber's report. Ask the City of Ekurhuleni about its current process, and keep the invoice.
