Plumbing prices vary a lot with the job, the time of day and the materials, so a quote is the only real answer. These figures help you check whether a quote is in a sensible range.
How plumbers charge
- Call-out fee. Most plumbers charge one to come out and look, especially after hours. Ask whether it's deducted from the job if you go ahead.
- Labour. Usually by the hour or a fixed price for common jobs like a geyser swap.
- Materials. Pipes, valves and fittings are added on top. Ask for them to be itemised.
- After hours and weekends usually cost more. If it isn't an emergency, a weekday booking is cheaper.
Geyser replacement (2026)
| Item | Typical price |
|---|---|
| 150-litre electric geyser (unit only) | about R4,200 to R5,900 |
| 100-litre electric geyser (unit only) | about R4,000 to R5,800 |
| 200-litre electric geyser (unit only) | about R7,600 to R8,200 |
| Standard installation | about R2,500 to R5,500 |
| 150-litre replaced, all in | about R6,700 to R9,000 |
Extras that push the price up: new pipework, a drip tray, valves that don't meet current standards, and difficult roof access. A Certificate of Compliance for the installation is needed before the new geyser is switched on, so ask whether it's included.
If your geyser burst, check your household insurance first. Insurers usually want a plumber's report and photos, and may have their own approved plumbers. See what to do when your geyser bursts.
Plumbing certificates
A plumbing Certificate of Compliance usually costs in the region of R500 to R1,000, more if repairs are needed first.
Getting a fair price
- Get at least two written quotes for anything bigger than a small repair.
- Ask whether the plumber is registered with PIRB.
- Ask what's guaranteed and for how long.
- Pay for materials only against an itemised invoice.

Frequently asked questions
Why do plumbing quotes vary so much?
Call-out fees, hourly rates, parts brands, travel and whether the price includes the certificate of compliance all differ between plumbers. Compare written quotes for the same job and parts.
Is a call-out fee normal?
Yes, most plumbers charge one, and after-hours call-outs cost more. Ask whether the call-out fee is deducted from the job if you go ahead.
Does insurance pay for a geyser replacement?
A burst geyser and the resulting damage are usually covered by household insurance, subject to your excess and policy terms. Wear and tear, like a slow leak or an element failing, often isn't. Phone your insurer before you appoint a plumber. See burst geyser: what to do.
Should I pay a deposit?
For larger jobs a deposit for parts is common. Pay by EFT to a business account, get a written quote first, and avoid paying the full amount upfront.
